Short Story : Come back soon

Rajiv was standing at the bus stop looking for a bus so that he could reach home early. He was already struck at office for half an hour more than his usual schedule and now it is 7 pm in the evening and a huge crowd is present in the bus stop.

He already had a hectic day and now standing at this bus stop is killing him, there is no place to stand and there is no indication that buses are going to come soon. Among all these, Rajiv's mind is somewhere else, he is thinking about the hot tea and snacks his wife would prepare for him when he will return home.

"Oh God ! when will this bus arrive." Just as he said these words, he noticed a bus coming towards the bus stop, like God granted him his wish. In his excitement he started rushing towards the bus. He knew with so many people around him, he would have to reach for the seat first or have to stand the whole journey or worse he may not even get space to be on the bus.

Most people around him also started running after seeing the bus. This actually led to a great chaos. Rajiv was struggling to get on the bus when suddenly some people started pushing others to go ahead. The bus actually doesn't stop for that long and seeing it getting cramped the driver started the bus. Rajiv knew this was not his day as he wasn't able to get on the bus.

Few people still tried to get on the moving bus and while he was watching the bus go suddenly an old man trying to climb on the bus fell badly and got crushed by the rear wheels of the bus. The private bus owners didn't stopped the bus. rajiv thought in today's world nobody stops. The driver would have been trashed if he would have stopped and I feel passengers are more worried about reaching home than who fell from the bus. It is a tough world and only the fittest survive.

As he was lost in his thought he saw that nobody is coming to help the old man who got badly injured. He thought, "I'm already late, maybe God wanted me to help this man today." He went close to him and found that the man was badly hurt. The police arrived in few minutes as well. As the police reached the scene, rajiv thought he should leave as police may do their work now.

He just started to move back when one of policeman shouted at him, "hello!". Rajiv looked back and said "Are you talking to me ?" The policeman in his stern voice said "Yes, to you only. You were the guy standing next to him, you are our prime witness. You have to come with us to the station." Rajiv was shocked "To the station but I just checked that he is alright or not." "Whatever it is, you have to come with us as if he dies there would be a serious case and for not cooperating you could also be in danger." Rajiv just got choked, he could hardly understand how he got caught me in all this.

Rajiv in his low voice murmured, "why would I be in danger, I have not done anything". The inspector who was standing next to the constable hearing all this got fed up and looked at his constables and said "Don't talk so much, just pick him up and put him in the jeep and if he still keeps on talking nonsense tell him that he would have to spend the night at jail for not cooperating with the investigation."

Rajiv looked at the constables in a shell shock manner while they grabbed his hand to put him in the police jeep. The only voice that echoed his head was his wife who told him to "Come back soon..."

There could have been a better approach by the police.

    1. Yes, there should be but this is actually why people fear helping others. :)

  2. Phew!! I think this is one of the reasons why people dont stand to help someone else in trouble. Just imagine the trouble he has to go through for helping someone. Instead of appreciating it, if it is punished, why would such a man go out and help someone else in life?!

    1. True, the witness are more harassed than the culprits. The process and the system has to be improved. :)

  3. Yes dear, it's a tough world & only the fittest survive. The naked truth is no one come here to rescue others but to survive on its own. :(

    1. That's really well put forward. People are actually having a hard time to save themself hence hardly anyone is interested in helping others. :)

    1. That's true. People are actually in fear, they want to help but they now if they help then they will have to face more problems than the culprits. :)

  5. That's one of the major reasons why people think twice before helping someone in cases where police can be involved.

    1. Yes, that's true. Nobody wants to increase their trouble as everyone is already having a hard life. :)

  6. This is one top reason why people do not help other people. But then why the candle march? If you cannot help do not show that you bother.

    1. Yes, that true. I don't think candle march is just a show. People are willing to help others but not at the cost of their own safety. People actually fear that they don't get caught up in any trouble. We can't actually blame people for thinking about their safety first. :)
