Toilet for Babli - Hygiene, Health and Dignity

Today's India is growing at a really fast speed, with the government pushing for economic reforms there is a lot of buzz in the market about development. Interestingly, when we try to look deep into this bubble of development we see that the development is limited to few domains only and is reaching to a very small number of people.

A large section of India is still "very poor" and here poor means that some even don't get enough food to eat, clean water to drink, clothes to wear. So, it can be easily understood that they don't even have a proper house and a toilet. This shows that the development in India is only at the surface and in economic terms it is not reaching the people who are at the bottom of the economic chart. The poorest of the poor are still getting neglected.

Why open defecation is the biggest problem India is facing ?

The poor people I mentioned above, hardly have any facilities. They do open defecation and it leads to many problems for the society and individuals.

Health hazards - The worst problem which arises from open defecation is health hazard. Open defecation leads to a huge amount of dirt in the surrounding areas which leads to many bacteria and harmful organsims growing at that place and making the people sick

The human excreta also permeates into the soil and make the ground water contaminated. This contamination of drinking water causes many serious diseases.

The open defecation also leads to creation of breeding ground for mosquitoes which in turn cause many deadly diseases.

Hygiene and cleanliness - Due to huge amount of human excreta being spread around the neighbourhood of the poor people, the whole environment becomes polluted. The air is filled with the smell of the excreta and all the water bodies also get affected. Since people are walking through the same area, the whole area becomes a hub for pollution.

Diginity - In India, we always talk about dignity of the women and girls but at the same time we turn a blind eye to the problem that a huge section of women in our country are doing open defecation. Where are the moralists now ? why don't these people come forward for these issues and help build toilets for these women.

If you read the local news in the newspaper then you would definitely know that a huge section of women are sexually assaulted while they go for open defecation. There are a huge number of women who actually keep silent and gets humiliated every day.

This is time for all of us to come together and work towards making our country free from open defecation.

I thanks Domex  (http://www.domex.in/) for starting such a noble initiative of creating toilets for the poor and working towards making our country They started this initiative last year. 2. Hi Gaurab, I've been wondering where you have been! This post struck a chord with me. I feel that there is an urgency to the need for aid to all of the world's poor. There are even children that go hungry here in the USA, not as much as in other parts of the world of course, it's just that it's everywhere. I have little money to give but when I have some extra I do what I can. I wish I had more to give. I will go to that website now, thank you Gaurab, it's good to "see" you again. Take care,
